How to Get a Cat C1 Licence to Join NIAS Ambulance Service

Are you planning to become an ambulance driver with NIAS? Do you need to get a Cat C1 licence but have no idea where to begin?

Starting the process of learning to drive a Category C1 vehicle can be an intimidating thought.

However, we have broken it down into 5 clear steps.

Follow these steps and you’ll be well on your way to acquiring your Cat C1 licence that will allow you to drive an ambulance.

Step 1:

Arrange a medical with your doctor and check if they can complete the vision assessment or if you need to book an appointment with an optician. Fees are at the discretion of your surgery and optician. You will need a DLM1 form for this and you can call to our office to get the form.

Step 2:

Then, apply to DVA, Coleraine, for your provisional Category C1 lorry licence. The cost is £20. You will need a DL2 form for this and again we can provide you with this when you call in.

Step 3:

While you wait for your provisional licence, you should start studying for your theory and hazard perception tests. Don’t be put off by this; our experienced and knowledgeable instructors can provide theory tuition lessons to help prepare you. You can purchase the most up to date study material from Lloyds School of Motoring.

Step 4:

When your provisional licence is returned and your studying is complete, now is the time to book your theory and hazard perception tests. Our experienced office staff can help you to arrange these.

Step 5:

Once you have passed your theory tests, it’s time to book onto our driver training course (sometimes called an Cat C1 Crash Course!). You will get to know us and we will get to know you during your four days of training. Everyone at Lloyds School of Motoring will be there to champion you through to test day and beyond.
