How to Get a Cat C1 Licence to Join NIAS Ambulance Service

Are you planning to become an ambulance driver with NIAS? Do you need to get a Cat C1 licence but have no idea where to begin?

Starting the process of learning to drive a Category C1 vehicle can be an intimidating thought.

However, we have broken it down into 5 clear steps.

Follow these steps and you’ll be well on your way to acquiring your Cat C1 licence that will allow you to drive an ambulance.

Step 1:

Arrange a medical with your doctor and check if they can complete the vision assessment or if you need to book an appointment with an optician. Fees are at the discretion of your surgery and optician. You will need a DLM1 form for this and you can call to our office to get the form.

Step 2:

Then, apply to DVA, Coleraine, for your provisional Category C1 lorry licence. The cost is £20. You will need a DL2 form for this and again we can provide you with this when you call in.

Step 3:

While you wait for your provisional licence, you should start studying for your theory and hazard perception tests. Don’t be put off by this; our experienced and knowledgeable instructors can provide theory tuition lessons to help prepare you. You can purchase the most up to date study material from Lloyds School of Motoring.

Step 4:

When your provisional licence is returned and your studying is complete, now is the time to book your theory and hazard perception tests. Our experienced office staff can help you to arrange these.

Step 5:

Once you have passed your theory tests, it’s time to book onto our driver training course (sometimes called an Cat C1 Crash Course!). You will get to know us and we will get to know you during your four days of training. Everyone at Lloyds School of Motoring will be there to champion you through to test day and beyond.

11 Reasons to choose Lloyds School of Motoring

11 Reasons Lloyds School of Motoring Offers The Best Bus & Lorry Training in Northern Ireland

There are many bus and lorry driving schools providing driving lessons in Belfast and across Northern Ireland. We know that. But what we also know is that Lloyds School of Motoring is a great choice.

Need Convincing?

Here are 11 reasons why we believe we are the best bus and lorry driver training school for you.

1. Prime Location

Located just 15 minutes from the centre of Belfast, we are in a prime location and within easy reach of the Balmoral DVA test centre. Our students come from all over Northern Ireland and we are particularly convenient for those living in Antrim, Newtownabbey, Carrickfergus, Lisburn, Bangor, Downpatrick and many other areas of NI.

2. Spacious Parking Areas

Unlike other city-based schools, we have spacious, free car parking onsite for the convenience of our students and visitors.

3. Fully Equipped Training Facilities

We are based in a fully equipped training centre with a busy administration office, a training suite for up to 15 people together with comfortable rest areas to relax in during break times or after a busy day of training.

4. Large Off-Road Space

Our large site offers a private off-road reversing area. This creates an environment that is safer and more comfortable for first time learners than the busy road or public spaces used by other driving schools. You will have plenty of time to practice manoeuvres so that by the time you’ve completed 7.5 tonne, class 2 or class 1 lorry training or bus driver training, you’ll be able to reverse and drive the vehicle with the confidence to pass your test.

5. Driver Training for Individuals and Companies

Are you an individual looking to drive a lorry or a bus? Or are you from a company wanting to book PCV or HGV driver training for a number of staff members? Whatever your situation or size of company, we offer driver training to suit all requirements and can tailor courses to suit your needs.

6. Highly Experienced Instructors

At Lloyds School of Motoring, you learn from the best. We are the only NI driving school with approved NVDIR instructors for bus and lorry training. Each instructor is frequently tested throughout their career with us to keep standards high. Our commercial training centre is also fully accredited, so you’re in good hands.

7. Family Run Business

We are a family-run business, named after the owner and general manager, Lloyd Walker who has been a professional driver trainer for over 20 years. We offer a friendly, helpful and professional service and are proud of the high level of repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals we enjoy as a result of the service we provide.

8. Regular DVA Test Appointments

Over our many years in business, we have built up a good relationship with the DVA and are allocated regular test appointments each week. This means that we can guarantee you a test appointment for your chosen vehicle category.

9. Automatic Vehicles Available

Here at Lloyds School of Motoring, we move with the times. The majority of our training buses and lorries have automatic transmission, leaving you more time to concentrate on other critical driver training issues. As long as you hold a manual transmission car licence (which most people do) you will be able to drive manual or automatic vehicles in your place of work.

10. Friendly Team

Need help filling out forms? Want to ask about our driver training services? Lloyds friendly and knowledgeable and experienced staff are always on hand to answer your every query. After all we have been in the driver training business in Northern Ireland for over 15 years and have helped thousands of aspiring commercial drivers achieve their HGV licence or bus licence.

11. High First-Time Pass Rate

Worried about passing your driving test? Here at Lloyds School of Motoring, we are proud of our high first-time pass rate. We will give you the in-cab and reversing tuition to build up the skills and knowledge required to pass your test.
