Driver CPC Training

Driver CPC is short for “Driver Certificate of Professional Competence”. The EU passed the Driver CPC EU Directive in 2003. This affects all professional LGV and PCV drivers. For new drivers it introduces a new initial qualification, the Driver CPC, which increases the level of knowledge that drivers need before they can drive.
All drivers, new and existing, now have to undertake 35 hours of training every five years to ensure that their Driver CPC remains valid. This is known as Periodic Training.

If you are a current LGV and PCV licence holder you will require to complete 35 hours of periodic Driver CPC training in order to obtain a Driver qualification card to drive professionally from 2013 (For PCV Licence holders) and 2014 (For LGV Licence holders). On completion of 35 hours CPC training the DVLA will issue a Drivers Qualification card to demonstrate that the licence holder has completed all Modules of Driver CPC training.
This is an attendance based course only in various locations throughout Northern Ireland. There is no test and the only requirement is to attend 5 x 7 hour Modules to comply with the training requirement. There is NO TEST involved.

WHY DO DRIVERS NEED THIS ?
Periodic Training is designed to remind and revise existing knowledge and skills of each driver to ensure that they continue to be safe, courteous and fuel-efficient drivers.
This will also enable drivers to keep up-to-date with ever changing regulations and to benefit from training throughout their whole career.
WHEN DID DRIVER CPC COME INTO EFFECT?
- For bus and coach drivers 10 September 2008
- For lorry; and Van drivers (over 3.5 tons) 10 September 2009
WILL DRIVERS BE ABLE TO DRIVE PROFESSIONALLY WITHOUT THEIR DRIVER CPC QUALIFICATION?
The simple answer is “No”, unless drivers are covered by one of the exemptions. For list of exemptions, download the PDF at the bottom of this page.
REASONS WHY THIS TRAINING SHOULD START TODAY
Periodic Training costs may increase as the deadline approaches to complete this training.
If left until the last possible moment, this would result in a Driver being unavailable for work until all 5 Modules are complete. (Potentially a full week off work to attend training).
Immediate fines if continue to drive after the implementation date without the Driver Qualification card.
